FAQ

Electric or upright bass lessons in Montreal?

The 2 most common types of basses are electric and upright.  Electric bass is generally used in popular music, rock and funk.  It looks like a guitar however it normally only has 4 strings and is tuned an octave lower.  If you are interested in playing rock, funk or hip-hop, this would be the instrument for you.  The upright or standup bass is more commonly used in Jazz, old time Country, Bluegrass, Rockabilly and of course classical music.

What is the price of bass lessons in Montreal?

30 minutes: $ 25
45 minutes: $ 35
60 minutes: $ 45
These are average prices of bass lessons in Montreal.
The price of a bass lesson varies based on the length of the lessons and the experience of the teacher.

Where can I buy a bass in Montreal?

• Steve’s music offers a wide selection of basses at various price points.
• Alternatively, you can search on Kijiji for a used bass.
• The Facebook page Vente et échange d’équipement de musique is also a good place to look.
• Read about the affordable Squier P Bass guitar by Fender.

Should I buy a 4 string bass or 5 string bass?

Both are good. 4 string basses are normally tuned EADG and are still the norm. 5 string basses are tuned BEADG and are very common. There are even 6 string basses tuned BEADGC. Buy what you like and start playing.

How much does a beginner bass guitar cost?

A brand new bass guitar of good quality, can be purchased from a store for as little as $300. Many excellent instruments can be bought in the $400 -$700 price range. Used prices will be roughly 70% of new prices. Yamaha, Fender and Ibanez are well known brands of bass guitars.

How much does a beginner upright bass cost?

Well, no shortcuts. A beginner acoustic upright bass of good quality, made of plywood, setup well, with needed accessories will be about $3000 new from a store. Used upright basses might be about 60% of that. Buying a used upright bass, with the assistance of an upright bass teacher, is a great way to start. Stay away from those $600 upright basses found on eBay and similar! They are not good instruments for beginner players to learn on.

Which part of the city can I have my lessons?

All across the island of Montreal. Classes are also available in the West Island, Longueuil, Brossard and the south shore.
