Meet your Violin Faculty in Montreal

Academic Pedigree

Violin is an instrument where formal training shows, and our Montreal faculty has it: degrees from McGill's Schulich School of Music, the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, Université de Montréal and the École de musique Vincent-d'Indy. Several teachers also studied abroad, at schools like the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, the San Francisco Conservatory and Mannes in New York.

For an adult beginner, that rigour translates into patience and precision. A conservatory-trained teacher can spot posture and bowing issues before they become habits, and structure your progress so early sessions feel encouraging rather than squeaky and discouraging.

Local Presence

Our violin teachers are based in neighbourhoods across the island, including Ahuntsic, Villeray, the Plateau-Mont-Royal, Outremont, Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and downtown Montreal. That spread means a reasonable trip whether you live north, east or central.

Lessons work three ways: the teacher comes to your home, you go to their studio, or you connect online. Many locations are an easy metro ride, so a weekly lesson can fit around a downtown work schedule without a car.

Curated Expertise

Our violin bench is classical at its core — technique, repertoire, reading and musicianship taught the way conservatories teach it. Some teachers also cross into jazz violin and fiddle styles, which suits adults drawn to folk sessions or improvisation rather than recitals.

Violin is one of the instruments adults most often pick up later in life, and our matching reflects that. Tell us your goal — Bach, fiddle tunes, or simply a beautiful hobby — and we pair you with a vetted teacher who works well with adult beginners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any hidden fees or subscriptions?

No. The price on a teacher's profile is the full price you pay — no subscriptions, no contact fees. Some teachers who are members of the GMMQ (Quebec Musicians' Guild) include a pension surcharge, but this is always included in the displayed price. You are only charged when a lesson is confirmed by your teacher.

Do you offer in-person lessons near me?

Yes — Musiprof primarily connects you with teachers near you for in-person lessons at home or in studio. Online lessons are also available. Beyond private lessons, we offer a band program and community recitals for a complete musical experience.

What happens after I purchase?

The teacher will contact you within 24–48 hours to schedule your first lesson. If there's no contact within that window, Musiprof follows up on your behalf.

What is the refund policy?

You only pay for lessons taken. We refund untaken lessons minus a small cancellation fee (the lesser of $50 or 10% of the remaining value).

How frequently do lessons unfold?

By default, lessons are designed to be taken once per week to help you maintain consistency and momentum. A 5-lesson package, for example, is intended to be completed in 5 consecutive weeks. However, we understand that every student's goals are unique. If your teacher agrees, lessons can be scheduled at a different frequency (e.g., every 2 weeks or once per month). Please discuss your preferred schedule with your teacher during your first contact. Your package includes a 30-day grace period after your last scheduled session. If you are doing bi-weekly lessons, ask your teacher to extend your session dates in the system to ensure your file remains active.

Is there a Satisfaction Guarantee?

Yes! We want you to find the perfect match. If your first session isn't right, contact us within 48 hours. We'll credit 50% of the lesson cost back to your account so you can try a different teacher immediately.

Why should I pay through Musiprof instead of paying my teacher directly?

Paying through Musiprof is what keeps you protected — the Satisfaction Guarantee, refunds, and dispute support only apply to payments made on the platform. Paying a teacher directly (cash, e-transfer) voids those protections, and we can't help if something goes wrong. If a teacher ever asks you to pay outside Musiprof, please let us know.

Is Musiprof like a music school with semesters?

No. Musiprof has no semesters, terms or registration deadlines. You start with a single first lesson, covered by our Satisfaction Guarantee. After that, you continue at your own pace: buy a package of lessons or pay lesson by lesson. Unused lessons are refundable, and you can switch teachers at any time.

Do I have to buy a package?

No. After your first lesson, you can buy a package (usually a better price per lesson) or pay à la carte, where your card is charged after each completed lesson. Each teacher sets their own prices and lesson formats (in studio, at home or online), so check their profile for the details.

More about violin lessons

Is it really possible to start violin as an adult?
Yes, and it happens all the time — violin is one of the instruments adults most often take up later in life. You will not follow a child's path to a youth orchestra; you will follow yours, and adults' focus and discipline compensate for starting later.
Do I need to buy a violin before my first lesson?
No. Renting is the smart first move — Montreal has good rental shops, and a decent student violin rents affordably by the month. Your teacher can advise on size, setup and when it makes sense to buy.
How long before the violin stops sounding scratchy?
With weekly lessons and short daily practice, most adults produce a clean, pleasant tone within the first few months. A trained teacher accelerates this dramatically by fixing bow grip and contact point early, which is exactly what self-teaching misses.
How does matching work if I want fiddle or jazz rather than classical?
Just say so. Our violin faculty is classically trained at its core, but some teachers cross into jazz and fiddle styles, and matching is built to find that fit. The matching service is free, and if the first teacher is not right, we rematch you.
