About

Born in France, Charles' passion for music was sparked by his childhood love of Brazilian Batucada. At age seven, he began formal studies at the Conservatoire Régional de Lyon under the tutelage of Raphaëlle Frey-Maibach in Afro-Cuban percussion, and with Jean-Luc Rimey-Meille, Pierre Rouyer, and Attilio Terlizzi in classical percussion. At sixteen, Charles moved to Los Angeles to pursue studies at the Colburn School of Music with renowned orchestral percussionist Ted Atkatz. Chosen as principal percussionist of the Colburn Youth Orchestra (CYO), he had the opportunity to perform in radio-broadcasted concerts and live performances with the Colburn Academy Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Ken McGrath. After turning eighteen, Charles relocated to Montreal to study with Fabrice Marandola and complete a Bachelor of Music in Performance at McGill University's Schulich School of Music, graduating in June 2022. In Summer 2021, Charles won first prize in the International Percussion Youth Competition Belgium in the keyboard category and second prize in the snare drum category. In early 2023, he was selected as the percussionist for the newly formed Ensemble Éclat. He was also part of the Canadian percussion ensemble, Sixtrum Percussion from 2022 to 2024. In March 2024, Charles performed Mad Max and collaborated with composer Pierre Jodlowski during "La Semaine du Neuf," a Montreal music festival organized by Le Vivier, where Jodlowski was the featured composer. Charles completed his Master's in Percussion Performance at McGill University in May 2024. He has been awarded the 3rd price at the internationally renowned Universal Marimba Competition in November 2024.

What You'll Learn

Beginner Students : Build up an interest towards percussion playing. Introducing Snare Drum and Xylohpone playing and repertoire. Developing a practice weekly routine that would help the student improve in a timely manner. Intermediate students : Strenghening the basic techniques of percussion playing on snare drum and xylohpone as well as introducing Timpani playing. If intrested, introducing the basics of drumset playing. Developing the interest of the student towards percussion performance and following him/her to find his own musical voice and interest. Advanced students : I am thinking here about students wanting to go into CGEP. Helping them get mentally, physically, technically, musically ready to pass and win auditions and exams into music schools. Strengthening their fundamentals in all the three types of main percussion instruments, keyboards, snare drum and timpani. Building up a daily practice routine.
