How to learn easy guitar songs to play and sing?

Playing the guitar while singing is an amazing way to express yourself musically. Moreover, with the right learning process, you can learn a song faster than you might think. To be more specific, singing and playing the guitar requires a few different skills. Therefore, it is best to learn the following songs using a 5 step process.

approx. 1-14 days

Learn the lyrics and melody

Find your favourite version of the song and try to match your voice to the pitch and lyrics of the recording.

Learn the chords individually

Learn the guitar chords of the song and practise each one separately. Make sure the strings of each chord are resonating properly and that no strings are being muted due to improper finger placement. If you’re just starting out, aim to play simplified versions of the chords. *See the videos in this article for more details.

Connect the chords together

Connect the chords together in the right order using a right hand strumming pattern. *You can always keep it simple and just play 1,2 or 4 down strums per 4 beat count.

Bring all the parts together

Sing the lyrics over the chords and strumming pattern and make sure the right lyric falls on the right chord. If some areas are problematic, isolate them and work on them separately.

Adjust the key if needed

Find the key that fits your unique voice the best. The easiest way to do this is with a cap. (more on this later)

Transpose each song to the key that fits your voice

Each human voice is unique and has a different tonal range. This means that what works for one singer may not work as well for another. Rather than force your voice to fit the key of the original song, it’s much better to simply to find a key that works for you. Luckily on the guitar this is made easy thanks to the capo.

*if you don’t have a capo, I’ve linked to one that you can buy online.

How to use a capo to find your key

Capo to help you find the right key for easy guitar songs to play and sing

The great thing about the capo is that you can simply move it up and down the neck of your guitar to bring the key higher or lower. I suggest to start by learning the song in the original key while practising playing along to the recording. Once you have the song mastered to a reasonable degree, simply try it in a higher or lower key.

Pro tip: the right key will simply feel better and more comfortable for your unique vocal range.
