Born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, Jessica Lui began her musical endeavours at the age of six. She took a five year hiatus in classical piano, but she continued learning other instruments and pursuing different genres like jazz piano, performing around the Greater Vancouver area as a teen. Her passion for classical music was rekindled in 2020, and she went on to complete her Bachelor of Music with Distinction in Piano Performance from the University of Calgary under the tutelage of Lana Henchell. Jessica is experienced in performing with chamber ensembles, instrumentalists, and singers. During her time in Calgary, she took part in the performance and touring program – Soundboard Music Tour, which promotes classical music awareness around Alberta. She has also been featured as the artist faculty of the week at the Pixical Virtuoso Summer Program for Piano and participated in the Orford Musique Artist Residency in 2021. Jessica has been part of masterclasses with artists such as Andre Laplante, John O’Conor, Ronan O’Hora, and many others. She has been the recipient of several awards and scholarships, including those from the University of Calgary, the University of Toronto, the Calgary Performing Arts Festival, the Yvonne Johnston Award, and the Carr Prize. She also received the ARCT in Piano Performance Diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Jessica has a passion for teaching and enjoys finding creative ways to cultivate fun and excitement in her lessons while also providing students with the necessary tools to learn and grow musically. Jessica is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy (Performance) at the University of Toronto under the guidance of Midori Koga.
I love teaching piano and I always make sure to create a fun and encouraging environment while maintaining a high quality of work. I tailor my lessons to each individual student as I know everyone's way of learning is unique. My teaching style is focused on building a solid piano foundation (classically based) so that my students will be able to transfer their knowledge to other genres or instruments effortlessly in the future. I hope to guide and inspire my students toward their love and goals for music. I teach all levels from beginners to advanced pianists. I am able to help students prepare for RCM exams, performances and auditions.
