About

Deeply connected to his Caribbean roots as well as his early jazz influences, Kulusé Souriant is a versatile drummer, piano player and composer who has found his own voice by exploring many musical configurations. Accomplished musician, he was the composer and the bandleader of the contemporary jazz quintet Markit Zero as well as many great artists with whom he played in many European venues (Sunset/sunside, La Cigale, L'Alhanbra) and festivals (Jazz in Marciac, Earth Garden in Malta, African Acid is the Future in Berlin). He always was a substitute of choice in the Toulouse music scene, being able to adapt to any genre. His curiosity prompted him to live in Rio de Janeiro in 2019 and travel South-America for two years. In 2017 and 2018, he recorded and toured with the Guadeloupean singer Edmony Krater, reconnecting with the music of his ancestors – Gwo Ka – and having the opportunity to play in La Cigale (Paris), Earth Garden Festival (Malta) and African Acid is the Future (Berlin) among other places. In 2018 Kulusé was teaching in Toulouse Jean-Jaurès University of Jazz where he had studied (notably with Jean-Marc Padovani and Marc Ducret), as well a giving drums lessons in Montrabé music school and Agostini drums school, another school he graduated from. In 2021 Kulusé moved to New York were he studied at the New School of Jazz under the wise guidance of Ari Hoenig, Allison Miller, Reggie Workman, Darcy James Argue and Darius Jones. He also took drum lessons with Obed Calvaire, Kendrick Scott and Alon Benjamini. He finally settles down to Montreal where he earned a master degree in jazz performance and composition at UdeM. Curious of other cultures, Kulusé plays with the Colombian jazz bands Jomalé and Santiago Ferrer trio, in the latin-jazz band of his former teacher Julián Gutierrez and with the Argentinian songwriter Julian Muro, releasing soon an album under the direction of Dave Douglas.

What You'll Learn

My lessons are organized specifically for you depending on what you need/want to practice, your skills and your tastes. You are welcome to come to the lessons with specific questions or song/style that you want to learn. I will adapt my approach to still make you practice what I consider most important : - playing as much as possible with music and developing a god musical culture - practice coordination between the 4 members of your body (I like to do this practicing different music genres from all across the world, which is also good for culture and open-mindedness) - technique as vocabulary, to allow you to become more creative and fluid on the instrument - posture, breathing and self confidence on your playing Moreover, if you want I can also teach you : - to read music, so you can learn songs by yourself, but also come back home with exercises that I will write for you - to record yourself over drumless tracks. A great way to gain precision and to keep track of your progress - practice improvisation and developing creativity - learn and deepen a particular style of music : jazz, funk, Caribbean musics, kompa, Brazilian and south-American musics, rock, metal...
