About

Huizi Wang is a versatile musician and scholar, excelling as a percussionist, pianist, and arranger. Born into a family of literature professors in China, her musical journey began at an early age, starting piano studies at the tender age of 4. Her dedication and passion for music led her to pursue her literature studies in France at the age of 20. During her time in France, Huizi Wang discovered her love for percussion and honed her skills at the renowned Conservatoire national à rayonnement régional de Nice under the tutelage of Régis Famelart. After obtaining a DEM (Diploma of Musical Studies) and a Bachelor's degree in Musical Interpretation from the University of Nice-Sophia-Antipolis, she set her sights on Montreal, where she completed her Master's degree in percussion at the esteemed University of Montreal, studying with the accomplished Julien Gregoire. Continuing her pursuit of musical excellence, she is currently a doctoral candidate at the prestigious Schulich School of Music of McGill University, guided by the expertise of Fabrice Marandola. Her doctoral research delves into the intriguing application of Taoism in the musical interpretation of percussion, highlighting her dedication to exploring diverse aspects of her art. Huizi's musical talent has graced international stages, including performances with renowned ensembles such as the Monaco Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre philharmonique de Cannes, and the Orchestre philharmonique de Nice. Additionally, she is a valued member of the acclaimed percussion ensemble, Sixtrum, where her artistry collaborates with like-minded musicians to create innovative and captivating performances. As a well-rounded musician, Huizi Wang excels both as a soloist and chamber musician. In 2018, she mesmerized audiences with a captivating solo performance of "La Porte" by José Evangelista. Her collaborative spirit is evident in her work with various creators within the musical milieu of Montreal, while also making her mark within the Quebec orchestral community. Huizi's talents have been recognized and celebrated in various competitions. Notably, in March 2022, she received the esteemed McGill Romantic/Contemporary Concerto Competition award in the woodwind, brass, and percussion categories. This recognition culminated in an eagerly anticipated performance of "Sieidi" by Kalevi Aho with the McGill Symphony Orchestra, scheduled for 2023. Described as a harmonious blend of zenitude and exceptional virtuosity, Huizi Wang's playing evokes a unique and captivating experience for her audiences, leaving a lasting impression on all who have the privilege of listening to her artistry. Her passion for music, combined with her scholarly exploration of Taoism's influence on musical interpretation, makes her an exceptional and sought-after musician in the contemporary musical landscape.

What You'll Learn

My lessons are designed to provide a balanced approach that integrates technique, musicality, and creativity. For both piano and percussion/drum set, I tailor each lesson to the student’s level, goals, and learning style. I emphasize a strong foundation in rhythm, coordination, and musical expression while incorporating practical exercises, repertoire, and improvisation. For piano, I focus on building a solid technical base with finger exercises, sight-reading, and harmonic understanding, while also encouraging students to explore different genres and develop their interpretative skills. In percussion and drum set lessons, I guide students through rudiments, groove development, dynamic control, and independence, ensuring they gain confidence in both solo and ensemble settings. My approach combines structured learning with interactive and engaging methods to help students develop a deep connection with music.
