First and foremost, I determine the interests and needs of the student. I like to make sure that the student has a good technical base that is to say that he or she masters scales, chords and arpeggios. Often, regardless of the style of music chosen by the student, I will suggest a piece of the classical repertoire to keep his dexterity at a high level. I think it’s important to develop the student’s musical taste in the same way that we teach our students to develop their skills on the instrument. Each lesson includes a follow-up on the musical pieces the student is working on in addition to the teaching of new musical concepts and expanding the spectrum of music to which he or she is exposed.
- DEC in jazz performance at Vanier in 2014
- Bachelor’s in jazz performance at McGill Schulich School of Music in 2018
My career as a music teacher began in 2013. I had a maximum of 10 private students to whom I gave both practical and theoretical knowledge. I prepared several students for music exams such as RCM and auditions at CÉGEPs. The age of the students is not an important factor since I find a very individualized method for each of them. In these 6 years, I taught ages 5 to 65 years. I always introduce the concept of composition to my students and it is with pride that I can say that they all have original pieces in their portfolio, regardless of their level.
I have been a part of several rock bands early in my musical career including a tribute at Bon Jovi ‘Wild Knights’, and a tribute to Pearl Jam ‘Vitalogy’. I currently play with the Freddie James Project – a highly respected group in the city entertaining the public in the Top40 style. Since joining the band, I’ve toured Asia three times, including Beijing, and Kuala Lumpur on two occasions, plus a performance in the Maldives. Last year I formed a progressive rock/jazz fusion band called Algorhythm. I am the leader, singer, keyboardist and composer of this group. Moreover, we have released an EP that appears on all major streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer, etc.
