Guitar Lessons in NDG
Melvin teaches acoustic and electric, steel-string (not Classical) guitar to all levels and ages. He also teaches ukulele, beginner piano and pedal steel guitar, blues harmonica and jaw harp, as well as music theory and music history. He is strongly versed in jazz improvisation, open (i.e. non-standard) guitar tunings, slide guitar, and fingerpicking. In terms of topics for lessons, he is open to student interests but also has a wealth of musical knowledge from which to suggest new areas to explore.
Melvin has been playing guitar since receiving a guitar for Christmas when he was 15. He has received diplomas in jazz guitar performance and recording arts from Grant MacEwan College, a Bachelor of Arts (Combined Honours) in Music and Philosophy from the University of Alberta, and a Master of Arts and PhD in Musicology from McGill University. Prior to beginning graduate studies at McGill, he lived in Taiwan for two years where he taught English and played in many musical ensembles. He has a wide and varied musical taste and especially enjoys helping students develop their musical abilities.
